Grandmaster Ruslan Scherbakov presents an opening system for Black based on the Semi-Slav Triangle - an ambitious way to fight the ever-popular Queen's Gambit. Black's weapons include the Noteboom Variation - a dynamic counterattack which takes White out of his comfort zone and offers Black the chance to dictate the game from the outset. Scherbakov also examines options for Black against the aggressive Semi-Slav Marshall Gambit, as well as White's quieter tries such as the Exchange Variation, various defences of the c4-pawn and the Catalan approach. Scherbakov has over 20 years of experience studying and playing these opening variations, which have been tried and tested successfully at grandmaster level and are ideally designed for players who want to challenge White in the opening. This title is written by a renowned Semi-Slav Triangle expert. It is packed with new ideas and critical analysis. It explains typical plans and tactics for both sides.

Most chess puzzle books put you in an artificial situation: you are told a combination exists, what the theme is and what you are required to achieve. This one is different. In a real game, a player may sometimes need to find a combination. On the other hand he may have to reject a tactical idea and simply find a good positional move. His task is to find the right move, whatever it may be. The 300 puzzles in this book put you precisely in that situation. Spectacular ideas abound in these positions, but it is for you to decide whether to go in for them, or whether you would be falling into a trap. If you need them, there are hints to help you on your way. The book ends with a series of tests to measure your skills against those of other players.

For this new edition, John Nunn, a top-class grandmaster and a solving world champion, has added 50 new puzzles (with hints and detailed solutions) to test your skills to the full. For ease of following, extra diagrams have been added to the solutions throughout. Overall the book is 60 per cent bigger than the first edition.

A complete black repertoire with 1.e4 e5 against everything except the Ruy Lopez.

Igor Lysyj:
My main opening weapon throughout my chess career, from 1998 to 2010, was the French Defence. However, in the last five years of this period I played a large number of games in the strongest tournaments in Russia, mostly against players rated over 2600, and I suffered many humiliating but well-deserved defeats. These losses made me reconsider the situation and I came to the conclusion that the cramped positions in the French Defence are strategically risky and do not quite suit my playing style... In this book I have presented all my analyses and my discoveries during the World Cup 2011. I believe that it will be useful for chess players at all levels to study them, together with the excellent annotations and explanations of Roman Ovetchkin. The reader might justifiably pose the following question: "How to cope with the Ruy Lopez if you are Black?". In fact, almost every variation of this opening deserves to be analyzed in a separate volume, so we shall reveal to you the tremendously complicated and fashionable Berlin Defence in our next book." Roman Ovetchkin is an international grandmaster and an experienced coach and trainer. He was part of the team which enabled Ekaterina Kovalevska to become a vice-champion of the world in 2004. In 2007 he coached the "ABC" team and they shared 1st-2nd place in the European Cup for women. He was the winner of numerous international chess competitions. Igor Lysyi is an international grandmaster. He won many times the students' championships and the Russia Universiades, both as an individual and as a member of the team of the Ural University. He participated in the team of Russia which won the World Students' Championship in 2008. He was the winner of numerous international chess tournaments.

One of the great chess masters shares his secrets in this guide for intermediate and advanced players. Lasker analyzes basic methods of gaining advantages, exchange value of pieces, openings, combinations, position play, aesthetics, and other important maneuvers. Examples from games by other modern masters illuminate the discussions. More than 300 diagrams.

Emanuel Lasker (1868-1941) was the Second World Chess Champion. He held the title from 1894 until 1921 and is considered by many as the greatest chess player ever. Although his place in chess history would be secure without achieving anything else, in fact the three books he wrote, "Lasker's Manual of Chess," "Common Sense in Chess," and "St. Petersburg 1909" have all become chess classics.
