Code:  2631-SP-Playing the Trompowsky - An Attacking Repertoire (2013)

The Trompowsky was for long regarded as an inferior opening, violating the opening principles because it allows Black to immediately attack the bishop while ‘improving’ his knight. But in recent times, especially the last 15-20 years, this opening dropped its bad reputation and established itself as an aggressive choice for players who prefer piece play over pure positional play. The Trompowsky belongs to the Queen’s Pawn Openings where Black answers 1.d4 with …Nf6 instead of the traditional …d5. The difference is obvious: Black does not care about central stability, which he would if he took a pawn in the centre, but relies on piece play, i.e. the central control with his pieces. This gives White the opportunity to question this very piece and to either exchange it off or to relocate it (in most cases to e4), where It might be less stable.
This book is written from White’s point of view and provides a complete repertoire based on 1.d4 & 2.Bg5!?. Despite the title, which belongs only to the moves 1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5, the author provides analysis and material to other Black responses, such as 1.d4 d5 2.Bg5!? or1.d4 f5 (the Dutch Defence) 2.Bg5!?, an attack which is currently considered critical, as it completely avoids typical Dutch structures and gives White dangerous piece play as proven by GM Lars Schandorff and Mr. Kaufman.

Many of the classics of Soviet chess literature have struggled to see the light of day, but none more so than Soviet Middlegame Technique by Peter Romanovsky. The original version of this famous guide to the middlegame was published in 1929 when Romanovsky was Soviet Champion. Romanovsky later decided to update and improve his work. As he finished his work in 1942, World War II was underway and Romanovsky was trapped in the notorious siege of Leningrad. The author barely survived and his manuscript was lost.

This is a very thorough book on the middle game. It is a classic, which is why I bought it even though I had not known anything specific about it beforehand. The middle game is not as easy to classify as the openings or various endgames are, and there is and always will be, in my opinion, a lot of art and judgment in the middle game. This book does an excellent job of explaining the important aspects and a lot of subtleties too. It is a top shelf book to have in your library.

This is a repertoire book for Black in the King's Indian by an elite player and experienced author. Victor Bologan doesn't give every line for Black, only the ones that he considers best or those in his personal repertoire. There is a lot to fit into the book's 356 pages, and Bologan does an admirable job of covering the lines in breadth and in depth.

Part 1. Minor Variations [Chapters 1-10]
Part 2. Averbakh Variation [Chapters 11 and 12]
Part 3. Saemisch Attack [Chapters 13-16]
Part 4. Four Pawns Attack [Chapters 17-19]
Part 5. Classical Variation [Chapters 20-27]
Part 6. Fianchetto Systems [Chapters 28-31]
[Final Part] Other Fianchetto Systems [Chapters 32-34]

Bologan has followed the approach familiar to readers of other Chess-Stars opening books, especially the Khalifman series: on the first page of each Part, the author gives a brief introduction to White's ideas in his chosen method of facing the KI, and then at the beginning of each chapter Bologan gives a very brief explanation of White's goals of the chosen system and how Black ought to deal with them. As he moves through the lines he proposes he gives some brief tactical/strategic comments and in some cases shows why this or that move should be played. When the time comes for sample continuations from GM practice, Bologan gives the line with a brief evaluative comment at the end.

Alexander Kotov's trilogy, of which this is the second volume, marks a landmark in chess literature. For the first time, a leading player managed to tackle the important elements of chess mastery in a methodical way which all chessplayers could understand, spiced with insight and colourful observation. Furthermore, his ideas and approach are as relevant to players today as they were when the books were first published.

This book follows on from Kotov's previous work "Think Like a Grandmaster". It is a guide to chess-playing for the amateur player. The book covers positional judgement, planning, combinational vision and calculation and practical play - each with many examples.
